Exploring, scientifically, sunflowers. Using their 5 senses, magnifying glasses and tweezers students dissected sunflowers, pulling out the seeds and looking at all the parts of the flower. What is that cottony white stuff under the seeds? What does it do? Why are some seeds easy to remove and harder in other flowers? So much discovery here!

In our study of apples we have tried them in a lot of different forms. We have taste tested and graphed our preference for types of apples. We dehydrated apples, made applesauce and pie and juice. Here we are sampling our pies. Yum!
We peeled apples with Mrs. West's apple peeler that takes off the peel in one long strip. We measured the strips in standard and non-standard units. We found some peels that were the same height as we were and some even taller than a teacher! We set out many peels end to end and they were longer than all the students lying down!

Our scientists donned their safety googles and reviewed safety rules. They had containers of baking soda, vinegar and plastic cups. Each child tried combining the materials on their own tray and made discoveries. What is happening? We learned this is called a chemical reaction. What happens with more baking soda? What about more vinegar? What do you observe with your senses? Try adding some paint. How does that change the reaction? What happens after the reaction?
